HOPAL: Maganlal Barela, the man who beheaded his five daughters in in 2011, would be executed at central jail, Jabalpur on Thursday morning.
According to reports, he will be hanged by the executioner of Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab. The Sehore district and sessions court has issued Maganlal’s “black warrant” for execution of sentence on August 8.
President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected Maganlal’s plea for clemency on July 22, 2013 after subsequent dismissal of his pleas for converting capital punishment into life imprisonment byhigh court (Jabalpur bench) and Supreme Court of India.
He was found guilty of beheading his daughters Arti (4), Savita (5), Leela (6), Jamuna (1), and Phool Kanwar (2) to death with an axe following a dispute over property with his two wives on June 11, 2010. Police charged him under Section 302 of the IPC.
He will be executed at “death chamber” located indistrict. Last man who went to the gallows at this jail was Kamta Prasad Tiwari. He was hanged on May 27, 1997 for stabbing to death an 8-year-old girl and then raping her.
The central jail of Jabalpur was the first government establishment constructed by the British in 1818 year after they took over the city. Patriot Meherban Singh was the first person to be hanged in this jail on August 10, 1858 for taking part in the 1857 mutiny. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was also imprisoned here by the British. It is the largest.
MP prisons department had approached their counterparts in Uttar Pradesh for a hangman to execute the conviction, said sources. The executor reachedon Monday. Several trial runs have been carried out to ensure a quick and painless death as possible, said officers of the jail department.
If everything goes per the schedule, Maganlal will be led to the scaffold with hands cuffed behind the back in the dawn. The hangman will slip a black mask over his head. He will wait for the jail superintendent to drop a white handkerchief to ease back the lever controlling the trap door and dispatch the condemned prisoner to his death.
Additional inspector general (AIG) prisons AK Khare has been sent to Jabalpur to supervise the arrangements before final execution. Kharewas superintendent of the same jail when Kamta Prasad Tiwari was executed there 16 years ago.
